Test Format

Total Duration: 2 hours 45 minutes

1. Listening (30 minutes + 10 minutes transfer time)

  • 4 sections with 40 questions
  • Range of accents (British, American, Australian)
  • Conversations and monologues in everyday and academic contexts
  • Question types: multiple choice, matching, labeling, completion

2. Reading (60 minutes)

  • 3 sections with 40 questions
  • Academic: passages from books, journals, magazines
  • General Training: extracts from books, magazines, newspapers, notices, advertisements, company handbooks
  • Tests reading for gist, main ideas, detail, logical argument, and writer’s opinions

3. Writing (60 minutes)

  • Task 1 (20 minutes):
    • Academic: Describe visual information (graph, chart, diagram).
    • General: Write a letter.
  • Task 2 (40 minutes): Essay on a given topic (minimum 250 words)

4. Speaking (11-14 minutes)

  • Face-to-face interview with certified examiner
  • Part 1: Introduction and general questions
  • Part 2: Individual long turn (speak for 2 minutes on given topic)
  • Part 3: Two-way discussion on abstract ideas related to Part 2

Scoring System

  • Band scores from 0 (non-user) to 9 (expert user)
  • Scores reported in whole and half bands
  • Overall band score is average of four sections
  • No pass or fail—universities set their own requirements (typically 6.0-7.5)
  • Score validity: 2 years
  • Test Report Form (TRF) issued to all test-takers.
